Students As Designers for the 21st Century (Applied Learning Programme)

Students As Designers In the 21st Century is the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) designed to equip students with 21st CC skills so as to achieve the nation’s SMART vision. The programme sets out to achieve the following four objectives.  To enable students to:-

1.    demonstrate 21st CC skills through computational thinking and thinking skills,

2.    develop problem-solving capabilities for the future

3.    develop ICT skills for the future workforce and

4.    contribute back to the community leveraging on technology

Junior Coder

Scratch Jr (Introduction)

-Students learn to programme characters to communicate in Scratch Jr to present a short conversation

Action-based Problem Solving (AbPS)

- Use 6-step process introduced to students to identify problem in a short rhymes taken from the English lesson. They are required to propose an action plan to resolve the issue.

Theme: Nursery Rhymes

- Students will be guided with the 6-step AbPS process in brainstorming, problem-solving and designing stages. They will then present their prototype through a short animation of characters in Nursery Rhymes in Scratch Jr.

Beginner Coder

Scratch Jr         (Advanced)

-Students learn to programme characters by inserting their voice and change of background to improve their quality of the presentation.

Action-based Problem Solving (AbPS)

- Use 6-step process introduced to students to identify problem in a fairy tale. They are required to propose an action plan to resolve the issue.

Theme: Fairy Tales

- Students will be guided with the 6-step AbPS process in brainstorming, problem-solving and designing stages. They will then present their prototype through a short story of the fairy tale in Scratch Jr.

Intermediate Coder Scratch 2.0 and Moway robots

-Students learn to programme sensor that detects light and sound. It will be part of their Science lesson to learn how intensity of light and loudness of sound affect the Moway robot.  

Community-based Problem Solving (CmPS)

-Use 6-step CmPS protocol to identify and work on School-based problems.

Students will be taught how to design survey questions and prioritise the information collected

Theme: School is my Home

-Students guided by the 6 steps CmPS to identify the problems in the school. They will brainstorm and decide on the issue and derive an action plan. E.g. students may surface wastage of energy or noise pollution. In the prototyping stage, students will come with light senor or noise detector.  

Civic Literacy, Collaboration, Creative & Critical and Problem Solving

Senior Coder

Scratch 2.0 and Artec robots

--Students learn to programme sensor that detects light and movement. This is part of their Science lesson related to energy and forces. They will programme the Artec robots to perform certain tasks based on the sensor.  

Community-based Problem Solving (CmPS)

-Use 6-step CmPS protocol to identify and work on School-based problems.

Students will be taught how to design interview questions and prioritise the information collected

Theme: Aging Population

Interview skills

Use 6-step CmPS protocol to work on problems faced by the elderly. Students interview elderly in school and neighbourhood.

Given Problem Scenarios (Eg. Elderly forgets to switch off lights & fans, Difficulty moving to get walking stick)

Propose solutions using Coding skills.

Expert Coder           Game and robot design using Scratch 2.0

Students use programming to design games and robots that support students in designing a SMART City.

 

Community-based Problem Solving (CmPS)

Design Thinking Protocol

Students collect information from their peers to decide what are the aspects of SMART City.

Theme: SMART City

Use categories such as Transport, Healthcare, Education, Home, Work etc

Each group to pick a category to work on using CmPS protocol (Eg. SMART Transportation) & propose & work out solutions using coding knowledge & skills

Different categories to come together to form a SMART City.

Students use programming to design anything that surface as a need in community. (Eg. Musical Staircase

Design Thinking Protocol

Students collect information from their peers to decide what are the needs in school and community.

Theme: Contributing back to Society

Students will prototype their ideas in the school for the initial stage. Thereafter, they will collaborate with the Yuhua CC to build their ideas in the community.
